The benefits realised from using simulation within the field of nuclear decommissioning include:
- Showing that a proposed design for a reactor decommissioning plant would take over 5 years to process and encapsulate material against a target of 2 years; developing a more efficient design that met production targets.
- Developing a strategy for processing of waste material currently held in disparate stores; by engaging with regulatory stakeholders, it was possible to negotiate a relaxation of non-critical constraints that resulted in a faster and more cost effective solution.
