1. Record Your WITNESS Video using WITNESS:

  • Open your model.
  • Under 'File' click on 'Record to AVI'.
  • Set the file name by clicking on the 'File' button. This will then tell you what name the video is saved under and where you can find it on your computer.
  • Choose the compression by clicking on the 'Compression' button. Select 'Microsoft Video 1'.
  • Under the 'Region' tab, click 'Select Window' and then click on the model window that you would like to record (at least 800 width by 600 height, preferably more).
  • Under the 'AVI File' tab, select the recording speed in frames per second (25 is a good starting point). You can then lower the recording speed if necessary but ensure that the playback remains at 25.
  • Run the model at a reasonable speed and press the record button. When the video has been playing for approximately 30 - 45 seconds stop the video.
  • Click on the 'Recompress' button. The time the video takes to compress will depend on the length of the video. Once the video has recompressed successfully, you can then watch the recorded video.

2. Use Windows Movie Maker to add your titles and credits:

  • Start a new project.
  • Under 'Movie Tasks' down the left hand side of the screen there are various headings. Under heading 1 'Capture Video', click on 'Import Video' and select the video that you have just recorded and click 'Import'.
  • Drag your video into the storyboard along the bottom of the screen. You can add further videos to the storyboard, and adjust the length of each one that you with to show in the final movie.
  • Under heading 2 'Edit Movie', click on 'Make titles or credits' and then click on 'Title at the beginning'.
  • In the top box type in the video title, which must contain the words 'WITNESS Simulation'.
  • Any text that you type in the bottom box will appear as a second line on the title page in smaller text. This is a default and it is optional whether you input any text in this box.
  • The standard animation is 'Fade In and Out' so to ensure that this is set click on 'change the title animation' under 'More options'.
  • The standard font and colour is Verdana and white on a dark blue background so ensure that your video has these settings by clicking on 'Change the text font and colour'.
  • Click 'Done, add title to movie'.
  • To add the credits at the end of the video, click on 'Make titles or credits' again and then click on 'Add credits at the end of the movie'.
  • Information should be input as follows:
    The name of your company and the date (month and year)
    Model Insert the name of the person who created the video
    Client Name of the client (if able to)
    Version State what version of WITNESS was used
  • Click on 'Change the title animation' to ensure it is on the 'Scroll, Up Side-by-Side' setting
  • Again ensure that the font, colour and background are standard.
  • Click 'Done, add title to movie'.
  • Above the storyboard click on the 'Show Timeline'. You can then add music to your video (or alternatively later on 'YouTube')by clicking on 'Import audio or music' under heading 1 'Capture Video'.
  • Select your soundtrack and click 'Import'.
  • Drag your audio soundtrack in the 'Audio/Music' section of the timeline. You can then amend the length of the soundtrack so that it is the same length as your video by hovering over the end of the clip and dragging it to the left or right.
  • You can also add overlay titles and other titles under heading 2 'Edit Movie' by clicking on 'Make titles or credits'.
  • Click on the storyboard where you would like the title/overlay to appear and then click on whether you would like it to be before, on or after the title. As with all other titles you can change the font, colour and animation depending on the colour on your video.
  • Once you are happy with your video, under heading 3 'Finish Movie', click on 'Save to my computer' and follow the directions on the screen.

3. Upload onto 'YouTube' and add annotations:

  • Sign in or sign up to 'YouTube'.
  • Check on the yellow 'Upload' button in the top right hand corner and select 'Upload video file'.
  • Click 'Upload Video' and select your file and click 'Open'.
  • Insert the title of your video, as stated on your opening title page. Note that this MUST include the phrase "WITNESS Simulation Software".
  • Insert a brief description of what your video entails.
  • Insert any relevant 'Tags' for search purposes, e.g. WITNESS, VR, simulation, etc.
  • Select a category that best describes your video, e.g. Science and Technology.
  • Under the 'Privacy' heading, select 'Share your video with the world'.
  • Click 'Save changes'.
  • Under your user name click on 'My videos'.
  • If you want to add speech bubbles, notes, spotlights and pauses, click on 'Annotations'.
  • Just highlight in the timeline where you would like your annotation to appear and then select one of the annotation buttons.
  • You can also change the colour, etc of your annotations by clicking on the annotation to display the options menu.
  • Once you have your final video click 'Publish'.
