I have just finished working on a large food and beverage project, which focused on the design and planning of a model to address issues of high flow rates, accumulation and packaging. The customer said that the ‘what if’ experimentation was the critical phase, and I understand why; because this phase directly impacts real business decisions which effect the bottom line. This led to uncovering the fact that adding a few more people on a shift in one area of the line would be more effective than purchasing a new piece of equipment - Its decisions like this which can save many millions in capital expenditures, one of the main financial benefits for investing in simulation.
